Maps help us connect to a place. We Are a Part of Something Bigger is a data inspired installation based on map research of the Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve. This work interprets digital maps of the preserve and the surrounding Los Padres National Forest into hand-crafted abstractions on fabric and paper. Deconstructed components of maps including geology, topography, waterways, and vegetation are referenced. Smaller works invite closer inspection, while larger semi-transparent fabric panels visually connect to the larger landscape beyond. This exploration seeks to capture the vastness, complexity, and essence of a place.
